As you know that all survivors in your camp regularly need food in order to satisfy their food need and also get some energy in the form of rest. Both these requirements of your survivors are fulfilled by the food they consume at regular intervals.
As you unlock and play at later cities on the map you will find that regular food is not enough to satisfy both these needs of survivors. Although you can increase the amount of rest fulfilled from food a little bit by upgrading secondary items in the kitchen but you won’t be able to increase the amount of food needs restored from food. This is the reason why on reaching later locations you will find that most or all of your survivors are always hungry, no matter how many times they eat.
If you are wondering about what is the problem if survivors remain hungry then let me tell you that there are three issues which could arise due to that. The first issue is the decreased work efficiency. When your survivors are hungry their work efficiency is reduced by 10% which means they will work slower and thus produce items slowly.
The second issue is that they might either die of hunger, leave the city or get sick. If the survivor dies or runs away from city then the affected building will lose a worker which means that building will produce less resource until you notice it and assign another worker through “Survivor Management” screen. If the survivor gets sick then he will be hospitalized and get back to work if he gets successfully treated at hospital. In that case your production will be affected only till he is in hospital.

How To Adjust Food Portion Size In Frozen City
After learning about above mentioned points you might now have understood how important it is to adjust food portion in Frozen City. But the question is how exactly do you do it? Well, adjusting portion size simply means changing or upgrading the meal you cook in the kitchen. You can actually make higher quality meals or food dishes in the kitchen which satisfy much more hunger needs of survivors.
You can cook three different dishes in your Kitchen. The default one is called “Basic Food” which satisfies +20 food need of a survivor. However at later locations this meal won’t be enough so you will need to cook better meals. Other than default meal you can also cook two other dishes which are “Hearty Meal” (satisfies +25 hunger) and “Fine Dining” (satisfies +30 hunger). Now the question comes how do you cook these two other meals in the Kitchen? Well, it’s quite easier than you might be thinking. The first thing you need to do is get Kitchen Hero which could be either Dr. Lee or Tony. If you don’t have any of these heroes then make sure to check out this post to learn how to get them. After getting your Kitchen hero you simply need to upgrade him to unlock and start cooking the new meals. The required hero level for new meals keeps increasing with new locations. Like in above image you can see it requires Tony at level 35 to cook Hearty Meal and Tony level 45 to make Fine Dining. Once you have upgraded the kitchen hero to required level you will start cooking the new meal in Kitchen.
Let me tell you a great thing about new kitchen meals, all 3 dishes in kitchen require the same amount of raw food. This means even though the new dishes will satisfy more hunger they will still require the same amount of raw food as default meal. So you don’t need to worry about producing more raw food to cook the better meals.
