1. The first and also one of the most important use of gold is for researching at Academy. Soon after you start researching Defense 1 of all your troops, you will realize that you need gold together with other resources to do that. You need to research these in order to be able to unlock Tier 3 troops at Barracks.
You will need thousands of gold for each of these researches and you might soon run out of gold after doing it a few times. You will most probably also need more and more gold for further researches. Therefore it’s really important to constantly keep farming gold from Quarry in the open world.

2. The second way to spend gold is for training Tier 3 and later troops. At beginning stages you might easily be able to clear missions just by training and deploying a big number of tier 1 and tier 2 troops. However as you reach mid game content, this strategy will start harming you.
This is because the missions will get harder which will make you lose a lot of troops in battles. This means you will need to keep spending resources for healing them at Infirmary. At this point you will realize that you need more stronger troops and that’s when you will need to train Tier 3 troops in your Infantry, Pikemen, Porter and Archer Barracks.
Although it’s not that expensive to train tier 3 troops in these Barracks however when you start to train tier 4, 5 and later troops, you will need much more gold. As they are quite expensive to train than tier 3 troops. Tier 3 troops are just the beginning of telling you that from now on you need gold for training more powerful troops.
3. The next way to spend gold is for healing wounded troops at Infirmary. You might be thinking that you have already used Infirmary numerous times and it never asked for gold. So let me tell you that the reason is because you are healing only tier 1 and 2 troops. Once you start healing tier 3 and above troops, you will also need gold together with other resources to do that.
4. This next way to spend gold will come into play after you have progressed enough in the game. When you have reached Chief’s Hall level 16, you will be able to build Smithy. By tapping on Smithy you will find 5 options to choose from. Tapping on the second last button you will find that you can craft various types of equipment.
When you tap on “Forge” button in front of any equipment you will find that you need gold in order to forge it. There are also different rarities of equipment and thus if you want to forge a more powerful equipment you will need much more gold. So make sure to keep saving millions of gold for forging at Smithy.
5. The last way you can use gold in Viking Rise is for hiring Mercenaries. When you reach Golden Lake after occupying Grimms Village you will find Mercenary Guild. From here you can hire up to 4 mercenaries per day and use them in battles to fight from your side, if you need to fight a strong enemy and you don’t yet have a large troop.
Note that if you don’t see gold as a requirement for hiring then the reason is because you need gold only for hiring tier 3 and higher mercenaries. Also, if you don’t see tier 3 or higher mercenaries in the list then make sure to upgrade your Chief’s Hall because higher the level of Chief’s Hall, higher the number and tier of mercenaries you get to hire.
