You will get these shards as exploration and completion rewards for each chapters and both Acts. You will get more shards while playing the later chapters. In Act 4 you receive 1,000 shards as completion reward and 3,000 shards for exploration. The complete Act 5 completion and exploration rewards are not yet known but they are guaranteed to provide more shards than Act 4.
If you are a new player to the game then it might take you quite a long time to unlock Act 4 and Act 5. Also, you don’t necessarily need a 5 star to finish up to Act 3. You can easily beat Act 1 – Act 3 using only 4 stars or even maxed out 3 stars.
